영어공부 혼자하기 - "compared to " ~와 비교해서

오늘 함께 공부할 영어회화 표현은 "~와 비교해서" 입니다.

나는 너랑 비교해서 성적이 안좋잖아~

우리 언닌 나와 비교했을때 훨씬 더 예뻐!
이렇듯 우리는 항상 다른 대상과 비교하기도 하고, a와 b를 비교하여 생각하는 일이 굉장히 빈번합니다. ~와 비교해서 ~ 하다. 이러한 문장을 영어에서는 어떤 표현을 쓸까요? 

바로 "compared to" 입니다.

 

 

compare라는 단어 자체가 a와 b를 비교하다 , 비유하다 이러한 의미입니다. compare a and b 이렇게 쓸수도 있고, compare a with (to) b 이렇게 쓸수도 있습니다. 

---> It is interesting to compare (their situation) and (ours). 
그들의 상황과 우리의 상황을 비교해 보면 흥미로워요. 
여기서는 compare a and b 이러한 문장인 것을 알수 있습니다. 

참고로, compare a to b는 a를 b에 비유하다 라는 의미로도 쓰입니다. 

---> Life is often compared to a voyage.  

인생은 흔히 여행에 비유됩니다.

~와 비교하여, 비교해서 라는 의미로
(as) compared with (to) 라는 숙어를 꼭 외워두시기 바랍니다.

너랑 비교하면 나는 땅꼬마 수준입니다.

그 사람에 비하면 전 아무 것도 아니죠.

내 상처는 그녀에 비하면 약과입니다.

 

-It has large eyes compared to its body. 

이것은 몸에 비해 큰 눈을 갖고 있습니다.

 

-I lack in ability compared to other people. 

나는 다른 사람들보다 실력이 부족합니다.

어떻게 작년과 비교했을 때 두 배나 되나요?

 

-Compared to last year, the price of rice has gone up. 

쌀값이 작년에 비해 올랐습니다.

 

-It's nothing compared to what I went through. 

제 경우와 비교하면 그것은 아무것도 아니에요.

 

-He has less hair compared to the past.

그는 예전에 비해 머리숱이 많이 줄었습니다.

 

-Sales of this year have doubled compared to last year's.  

매출이 지난해에 비해 두 배로 늘었습니다.

 

-It's a good price compared to other travel agencies. 

다른 여행사와 비교해서 좋은 가격입니다.

 

-Compared to American food, this is much more tasty. 

미국 음식과 비교했을 때, 이건 훨씬 더 맛이 있어요.

 

-His appearance is cuter, compared to his younger brother's. 

그의 외모는 동생보다 더 귀엽습니다.

겨울은 밤의 길이가 여름에 비해 훨씬 깁니다.

금주는 마약 끊기에 비하면 식은 죽 먹기 입니다.

다른 국가들에 비해 한국은 테니스를 잘 치지 못합니다.

 

-Girls are definitely lacking, compared to the number of boys at the present. 

현재 남자아이의 수와 비교해보면 여자아이는 절대적으로 부족합니다.

 

-Compared to Europe, Australia has cleaner air and water, and more available land. 

유럽에 비해 호주는 공기와 물이 더 깨끗하고 이용 가능한 토지도 더 많습니다.
